Magazine Cover Design Plans

As a group, we have each individually created 1-2 drafts of how we believe our magazine cover should be laid out. We have stuck to the conventional layout techniques and have made annotations using media terminology.

MAGAZINE COVER PLAN 1
  • The first plan clearly shows where each feature will be positioned on the cover
  • The quirky shapes around the selling price and cover lines attract attention to the important features and storylines
  • The left-third includes the masthead, the selling price, 2 cover lines and the magazine bar code. Keeping this information in this section of the magazine cover is important as the left-third is usually the only part of the cover that is visible when on the shelves.
  • The main cover line is slightly slanted, emphasising the confusion and uncertainty of the storyline
  • The magazine selling price is displayed twice to show off how affordable the issue really is

MAGAZINE COVER PLAN 2
  • A variety of colours have been used to create a bright and attractive magazine display. Using vibrant colours also highlights key features and storylines
  • Using question marks and exclamation points engages with the reader by asking them questions and promising them a juicy read
  • The bold outlines used around the cover lines contribute towards the business of the page and the colourful display
  • The colour red used in the masthead is a generic convention that is traditionally used in existing soap magazine covers (eg. What's on TV, TV choice, Soaplife, etc.)
  • DEVON ONLY UPLOAD ONE COVER!

Final Magazine Design

This is the final magazine design we created as a group by looking at existing designs on the current market.
This is the final design for our magazine cover. By looking at existing products, we believe that this design will grab the audience's attention with it's bright colours and various selling points, such as the "2 weeks revealed", "brand new soap" and discount offer on the top right of the cover. We have chosen the characters of Rachel, Ryan and Harriet to be the main images of the cover since it involves the most important character, Rachel, in the heart of the story as she is causing one of the main disturbances in Mill Lane and also links all the other characters together in the soap opera trailer by driving past them. Various other cover lines around this main image will include the characters of Edith, Jennifer, Marcus, Barry and Charlie as these characters are also involved in their own, separate story lines. The colour scheme with include bright colours such as blue, pink, yellow and white as these are commonly used on magazine listings covers and the font used for the main cover line will be large and in bubble writing.

Poster Design Plans

As a group, we have each individually created 1-2 drafts of how we believe our poster should be laid out. We have stuck to the conventional layout techniques, and have made annotations using media terminology.

A tagline is also necessary on this plan and could be situated at the top in the centre. This would be short and catchy to grab the audience's attention. The details at the bottom of the poster would overlap the main image and therefore would need to be in black or white so that they were clearly visible for the audience. A main image of all the cast would be used in the centre showing their relationships and introducing them to the audience.

Final Poster Design

In order to create the best slogan for our poster, we brainstormed our ideas. We looked at the message we wanted to convey in our poster, also focusing on the contrast between the character of Rachel and the others. To give us inspiration, we also looked at song lyrics.

This is our final poster design. Our message for the poster was to show that it's a traditional, rural soap but with a modern new twist. To fit with the rural, country setting, we decided to create a border in the style of an old picture frame and have all the characters (apart from Rachel) dressed in traditional clothing or that to reflect their character's personality. We also decided to have the characters in sepia tone to reflect the country theme and emphasise our message. Rachel, on the far right, will be in normal colour wearing a party outfit so that she stands out and the reader can make a direct link with the slogan and her character. "Mill Lane" will be placed at the bottom of the poster in a plaque, as seen on many old, traditional portraits. The font will be black, in capital letters and of a font similar to 'GEORGIA'  and the colour scheme will involve predominantly browns and golds, as well as red and brown.

Script Ideas

As our initial idea for our soap opera didn't include any diegetic sound with a non-diegetic voice over at the end, we thought about what we could put in the piece.

We thought about the different story lines we would show in the first piece and created a simple mind map on some diegetic words we could use. We thought about Todorov's theory of equilibrium and included soft, calm things but shown with a contrast of disruption and anger.

After looking at these, we decided we definitely didn't want to include any diegetic dialogue as it ruined the intensity of the piece. We created a script including diegetic sounds, such as the car at the beginning of the trailer. We also included a few separate things like whether the scene was interior or exterior and who was involved in the scene.

This is the voice over our group created for the script:

Script Development

This is the first, basic script we developed based on our storyboard. We havem't planned to use dialogue in our trailer but this may change in the final script depending on the development of our ideas and what we feel will limit us whilst filming. We have encorporated the transitions and locations, giving us a clearer picture in writing of how our final trailer will look.
